ENG 6009 (CGN 6933) Biological Principles of Environmental Engineering
DESCRIPTION:
  • This course improves the students knowledge and problem solving skills with respect to the Biological Principles used by Environmental Engineers to design biological processes.  Students will learn about microbial physiology and metabolism, and current methods used to understand bioprocesses.

MOTIVATION:
  • This course expands the advanced engineering students knowledge base by exploring the principles of microbiology that are required for designing biological processes for environmental engineering.
This course is a prerequisite for the Biological Processes for Environmental Engineering course (CEE 6xxx).

OBJECTIVES:
  • Become familiar with the types of microorganisms utilized in biological processes used in Environmental Engineering.
  • Understand basic metabolism of microorganisms.
  • Understand how microorganisms affect human health and the environment.
  • Learn how environmental engineers and scientists use molecular biology tools as research tools.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Upon completion of the class, students should be able to:
  • Read and understand literature on microbiology, microbial ecology, and biotechnology.
  • Identify and understand how several types of microorganisms are utilized in biological processes
  • Identify pathogens and bioterrorism agents of interest to environmental engineers and scientists
  • Determine the environment and nutrients required for specific microbial populations
  • Identify and understand classical microbiology and molecular biology methods used to interrogate a biological process
MAJOR TOPICS:
  • Cell physiology; phylogeny; microbial metabolism; Monod kinetics; microbial growth for microbiologists and environmental engineers; molecular biology tools; introduction to biological processes used by environmental engineers
