Programs and Degrees
A minimum of 30 semester hours
is required for a master's degree, of which 16 hours
must be at the 6000 level. At least 20 hours must be
in formal, regularly scheduled course work, 10 of which
must be at the 6000 level. Courses at the 5000 level
are acceptable for credit toward the master's degree;
and up to 6 hours of 4000-level courses may also be
taken as part of a planned degree program. All degree
programs require that a student pass an oral and/or
written examination of graduate course work administered
by the graduate committee and that M.S.C.E. and M.S.E.
students make an oral presentation of their thesis.

Master
of Science Program (M.S.C.E. , M.S.E., M.S.E.V.)
The Master of Science degree is a research oriented
degree where the student defines, examines and reports
in depth on a subject area relevant to engineering as
a major part of the degree requirements. The purpose
of the thesis is to instill in the student the ability
to inspect, evaluate, and report on a subject of interest
to the Engineering profession. If the thesis topic and
the majority of electives are selected in the environmental
engineering area, the student has the option of receiving
a M.S.E.V. degree.
As minimum requirements, the Master of Science Program
consists of 30 credit hours of which 6 hours come from
Thesis (CGN 6971)
Students with undergraduate Civil Engineering degrees
from an EAC/ABET accredited program will receive a Master
or Science in Civil Engineering (M.S.C.E.) degree while
students who have an EAC/ABET accredited undergraduate
engineering degree other than Civil Engineering will
receive a Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.)
degree. In the semester in which graduation is to occur,
students must enroll in at least 2 thesis hours and
submit a thesis to the Graduate School by the date established
for submission.
Master of Engineering
(M.E., M.C.E., or M.E.V.E.)
The Master of Engineering degree
provides a student with the opportunity of obtaining
an advanced degree by course work only. The minimum
course work requirement for the M.E. degree is 30 hours.
This degree is intended for students who will have had
at least two years of Civil Engineering related work
experience before graduation. The work experience should
include the preparation of reports. The student's graduate
committees may require documentation of report writing
ability before approving this degree. This degree is
recommended for part-time students who find it difficult
to do thesis research because of their work commitment.
At the present time, all of the Department's graduate
courses are offered on weekday evenings which will permit
part-time and FEEDS students the opportunity to seek
a graduate degree. If the majority of courses are selected
in the environmental engineering area, the student has
the option of receiving an M.E.V.E. degree.
Students with undergraduate Civil Engineering degrees
from an EAC/ABET accredited program will receive a Master
of Civil Engineering (M.C.E.) degree, while students
who have an EAC/ABET accredited undergraduate engineering
degree engineering degree other than Civil Engineering
will receive a Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree.
