Thesis and Dissertation

USF Graduate Studies

The thesis or dissertation (Ph.D.) represents a contribution by the student to the solution of an engineering problem. The problem may be theoretical, or it may be practical and immediately applicable to ongoing engineering work. The distinguishing features of the thesis and dissertation are the depth of the study and the near total independence of the student in the work. The thesis and dissertation must be carefully recorded in written form and defended, along with graduate course work, in an oral examination at the conclusion of the effort. It is recommended that well before graduation, the student submit two or more research papers to reputed journals in the area of specialization for possible publication. The result of peer reviews usually helps in the accomplishment of research objectives to meet the doctoral dissertation standards.

Also, all students presenting a Thesis or Dissertation will be expected to provide no less than two (2) copies on 100% cotton bond paper with original signature pages to the Department for binding. One copy will go to the Department Archives, the other copy remains the possession of the major professor or advisor. Copies will also need to be provided to the Dean of the College of Engineering and two (2) copies will need to be provided to the Graduate School. These copies do not include a personal copy.

On occasion, the thesis or dissertation may be a corollary study performed by a student in conjunction with employment on a research project. Numerous research projects by the faculty offer excellent opportunity for a student to work as a research assistant.
